Representative Chrissy Houlahan

Dear [firstname],

In our last survey, many of you responded that inflation continues to be a top concern. I get it. Although our economy has restored or created more than 5 million jobs since January 2021 and our nationwide unemployment rate is only 3.6 percent, our community and our country continue to face higher prices for everyday essentials like groceries and gas. This global inflation is caused by pandemic-related breaks in the supply chain, increased consumer demand for products, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It is a serious issue, and it requires serious solutions.

My Work Fighting Inflation and Strengthening Our Economy

-

Price increases hurt us all, and I’m committed to doing what I can to lower costs impacting families, seniors, and small businesses. That’s why the New Democrat Coalition and I started the first-of-its-kind Inflation Working Group in February. Since then we have met with economists and policy experts to develop our action plan to tackle this challenge head-on. Our Action Plan outlines tangible steps that President Biden and Congress can take to make a real difference for Pennsylvanians. I’m proud to report that Forbes called our proposal the “best inflation-fighting blueprint to come out of Congress yet.” But we must do more to combat this challenge.

That’s why in addition to this plan, I have taken other steps to reduce inflation. Some of them include:

  • Strengthening global supply chains and increasing price competition by reducing trade barriers to help prevent similar crises from arising again.
  • Bringing more people into the workforce by increasing access to affordable childcare and improving transportation to help get people to and from work faster.
  • Lowering oil prices by investing in renewable energy sources.
  • Decreasing food prices by helping farmers and producers get their products to market faster.
  • Standing with my colleagues in calling on President Biden to tap into the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
  • Helping to get the bipartisan Ocean Shipping Reform Act signed into law which will make tangible improvements for American exporters, easing our international supply chains and helping keep prices down for consumers.
  • Lowering costs not only for groceries and gas but also for other necessities like prescription drugs and childcare.

Upcoming Town Hall on Inflation and the Economy

--

I hope you’ll join me next Wednesday, July 27 at 6:30 for a telephone town hall focused on inflation and the economy. I will be joined by the chief economist for Moody’s Analytics, Mark Zandi, and we will be taking your questions. It’s easy to join - simply call (855-731-4616) at 6:30 and you’ll be connected to the event. I hope to “see” you then.

Looking Forward and Tackling Price Increases

As I work to continue to best serve our community, I want to hear from you. Will you take a quick minute to complete this survey below so I can better understand where our community stands on this and other important issues?

Which options do you feel are the best way to address high gas prices?

Release of barrels from strategic reserves- increasing imports from our allies

Pushing domestic producers to use existing federal leases that sit idle

Aggressive transition to cleaner, sustainable energy sources

Diversify our global supply chain for clean technology materials

Swift Implementation of IIJA funds and projects that will reduce the use of oil and gas ( expand rail, increase access to public transport)

Temporary pause to the biofuel, ethanol "E15," summertime ban

Invoking the Defense Production Act to source critical material and ramp up production for both oil/ gas and clean energy

Increasing Nuclear energy production and delaying the closure of existing facilities

Increase funding for LIHEAP

Submit survey to sign up for updates on my work in Congress.*

Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts with me—I’m grateful for your insight and investment to help me better represent you in Congress. Serving as our representative is the honor of my lifetime, and I hope to hear from you soon about your priorities. I hope you join us next week during our Telephone Town Hall to share your thoughts and questions directly.

As always, please contact my office if you need assistance.

Be well and see you soon.

Sincerely,

Chrissy Houlahan Signature
