As many of you know, I host an average of one town hall every month. My town halls typically focus on a specific topic, but I am doing something a little different this time! June’s town hall will be a “catch-all” where I’ll be answering questions on a variety of federal issues. This town hall (my 87th!) will be at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11 via telephone. In addition to inviting you to my upcoming town hall, I also wanted to give you an update on my work on the House Armed Services Committee, a success story where our office helped a constituent with emergency travel, and more! Playing Ball with the Fightin Phils

Last week, our local Reading Fightin Phils unveiled their new Redner's Warehouse Markets Event Space, providing fans with a new viewing option for gamedays and serving as a banquet venue throughout the year.

I was thrilled to celebrate this investment in our community made possible by the American Rescue Plan Act, which I proudly supported. Approximately $5 million dollars from this monumental bill went toward this project! Go Fightin Phils!

New STEM Education Opportunities in Reading

Also, thanks to federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act and the CARES Act, $55 million will be used to build a new STEM school for Reading students! I was able to tour the construction site, learn more about the design and construction (the steel is from Pennsylvania!), and meet with the school administrators. The new building will be used by roughly 1,000 students from 9th to 12th grade and include a full high school curriculum, including music, on top of its STEM focus.

Reading High School, locally known as “The Castle,” has been overcrowded for years. The new building will alleviate overcrowding on the main campus and provide students with a robust learning opportunity. As a former chemistry teacher and an engineer, I cannot wait to see our students and educators in the new building and what they will discover about STEM!

Especially when dealing with the passing of a loved one, passports and traveling abroad can be stressful. My office is here to help. Rajesh from West Chester needed to get to India to perform an important ritual for his deceased mother. We were able to expedite Rajesh’s passport processing in Philadelphia, helping Rajesh reach India in time.

Leading Bipartisan Wins for our Military Community

House Armed Services Committee’s 11-hour markup of the annual defense bill

I would be remiss if my bipartisan good news didn’t mention the all-day committee markup for the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) — the defense bill that is signed into law every year! It was a long day where my colleagues and I, both Republicans and Democrats, came together to debate amendments and draft this important piece of legislation that directly impacts our national security. I’m thrilled that the base of the bill was built on my work as Ranking Member of the committee’s military Quality of Life Panel. You can learn more about the dozens of provisions I successfully championed in the defense bill here.

Now that the bill has advanced out of committee, the next step is to vote on the House Floor. I look forward to sending a bipartisan bill to the Senate and future negotiations to ensure we are delivering for our brave men and women in uniform.
