Written by Bill Rettew WEST CHESTER — U.S. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, D-6, was Monday’s guest speaker at a Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce roundtable at Faunbrook Bed & Breakfast. About a dozen women attended the event. They gave each other support and mentored from a woman’s perspective. About six times per year, the chamber’s professional development committee holds the women’s roundtable. Houlahan is a military veteran. She noted that while 51 percent of the population are women, less than 20 percent of the military is comprised of women. The congresswoman talked about Heather Ward, a Tredyffrin/Easttown School District board member, who she learned much from. “Mentorship isn’t just up and down, it’s not always somebody above, but sometimes somebody across,” Houlahan, a businesswoman said. “It’s important to gather a network and encourage mentorship. “I’m honored to be invited. I look forward to learning from women in the community.” Mark Yoder, president of the GWCCC, said that the roundtable gives women a chance to speak openly and freely in a confidential setting. Melissa Hawes is with Miles Financial Management. “After 15 years in business, had I not been able to meet with some great women I meet around these tables, my business wouldn’t have been as prosperous and fulfilling,” Hawes said. Lauren Blake, executive board member of the GWCCC, appreciates the confidentiality. “Anything we’ve said doesn’t leave this table,” she said. She said the group discusses topics such as how to recruit employees, how to cope as a working mother and education. “To be mentored and to have somebody who truly has your best interests at heart helps you to reach your full potential,” she said. Jacqueline Segal is a partner with Fox Rothschild Law Firm. She has been a guest, a speaker and is now moderator of the roundtable. “It’s one of the most effective and pleasant ways of networking, meeting people and learning about other people’s professions,” she said. “Meeting other professionals here at the roundtable expands my base so I can service my clients better.” Faunbrook B & B owner Lori Zytkowicz said the roundtables are some of her favorite events. “I love the idea of a community sitting down and having a meal,” she said. |
