The Constitution guarantees that all citizens are guaranteed the fundamental right to participate in elections. In order to exercise the right to vote in Pennsylvania, you must register to vote.

In order to vote in Pennsylvania you must:

  • Register at least 15 days before the next election 
  • Be a citizen of the United States for at least one month before the election 
  • Be a resident of Pennsylvania and the district you are voting in at least 30 days before the election.  
  • Be at least 18 years of age on or before the election.
Many people have questions about whether or not you need to show an ID when going to the polls.  If you are voting in person, the first time voting at a new precinct or polling place, you must present a form of official ID (state-issued driver’s license, state-issued ID, etc.). After establishing your legal identity at a polling place, you do not need to show your ID again.

Important Dates

  • The deadline for voter registration is October 21, 2024.  
  • The suggested last day to request a mail-in ballot is October 21, 2024.  
  • The deadline to request a mail-in or absentee ballot is October 29, 2024
  • Polls are open throughout Pennsylvania on Tuesday, November 5 from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. 
    • Find your local polling place here. 
    • Pennsylvania does NOT offer same day registration. 

Registering 

  • You can complete voter registration application online, by mail, or in person here.  
  • It is helpful to have your Pennsylvania driver’s license or PennDOT ID card handy. If you don’t have one, you can upload a signature or print and sign the online form. Your County Election Officials will process your form.  
  • If you are unsure of your registration status, you can check here.   
  • If you decide to vote via mail-in or absentee ballot, you can track your ballot here.
  • Absentee and Mail-Ballots MUST be received by the Office of Election Services or returned to a designated drop box by 8 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, November 5, 2024, to be counted. 

Early Voting 

If you want to vote early in-person during an election, you must check with your county election office. 

Instructions on Early Voting in Pennsylvania: 

  1. Go to your county’s election office.  
  2. Fill out a mail ballot request form on site and wait for it to be verified. 
  3. Receive and complete your ballot following the instructions provided. 
  4. Place your completed ballot in the inner secrecy envelope labeled “official ballot” and seal it. Your ballot MUST be in the secrecy envelope to be counted. 
  5. Seal the smaller secrecy envelope inside the pre-addressed larger, outer return envelope. Your ballot MUST be in both envelopes to be counted. 
  6. Sign and date the voter declaration on the back of the outer return envelope. 
  7. Hand it back to your county’s election office staff for processing.
