Representative Houlahan Defends American Democracy From Foreign Interference

WASHINGTON – Today, Representative Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) introduced the Stop Supporting Foreign Interference in Our Democracy Act, which takes critical steps towards safeguarding our elections against foreign adversaries.

“Protecting our national security means protecting our elections,” said Houlahan. “Russia interfered in our 2016 Presidential election, and our best intelligence tells us they, and other foreign adversaries, will attempt to do so again in 2020. Any allegiances to political party are irrelevant; as a citizenry, we must move forward in shoring up our election security. The Stop Supporting Foreign Interference in Our Democracy Act prohibits Americans from knowingly providing assistance of any kind to foreign powers attempting to interfere in our elections. This legislation is crucial to our national security, and I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in both the House and Senate to rally around the effort to protect our democracy.”

The Stop Supporting Foreign Interference in Our Democracy Act would:

-Codify Federal Election Commission regulations that prohibit a U.S. citizen from knowingly providing a foreign person or organization substantial assistance to make an illegal contribution to an American campaign.
