Houlahan Supports Police Funding and Crime Reduction Measures in Proposed Budget

“We often hear the expression ‘actions speak louder than words.’ When it comes to the federal budget, I would change the common refrain only slightly: resources are more important than rhetoric—and Biden’s proposed budget says loud and clear that we support our police,”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) issued the following statement on President Biden’s proposed budget to fund our police:

“We often hear the expression ‘actions speak louder than words.’ When it comes to the federal budget, I would change the common refrain only slightly: resources are more important than rhetoric—and Biden’s proposed budget says loud and clear that we support our police,” said Houlahan.

“As every Pennsylvania family knows, our household budgets are a reflection of our values and priorities. It’s no different at the federal level—budgets and the resources that flow from them are a testament to who we are as a nation. For the second year in a row, this proposal will increase funding for federal law enforcement and state and local law enforcement and crime prevention programs (11% over FY22 and 18% over FY21). These funds would double the COPS hiring program, reduce gun and drug trafficking, invest in community violence prevention and more.”

“I am also encouraged that the proposal will cut our deficit by $1 trillion over the next decade, but this is not enough. I will be aggressively pushing all of my colleagues to move past necessary but temporary pandemic-era spending and renew our commitment to a fiscally responsible approach. On these and other proposals in the budget, my community hasn’t had enough time to share their thoughts with me yet—I look forward to hearing from them. To be sure, we are a long way from a final budget framework; this is a long and iterative process involving many stakeholders. As our representative, I would be proud to again deliver the funds our officers need to safely do their job and protect our community. I am equally proud to be a trusted representative for our community as we navigate this year’s budgetary process.”
