The World Affairs Council of Greater Reading held a foreign policy luncheon Thursday at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Reading.

Speaking at the event were U.S. Reps. Chrissy Houlahan, a Chester County Democrat, and Dan Meuser, a Luzerne County Republican.

The two combined represent most of Berks County, and each serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

About 140 people attended, about half of whom were high school students, according to Solomon Lausch, World Affairs Council president.

Following brief opening statements, the representatives responded to questions presented by Lausch, and then to questions from the audience.

The lawmakers agreed substantially on the present crisis in the Ukraine, the challenges posed by China across the world, immigration as a complex set of factors, the continuing need for a strong NATO and the role of the United States internationally, according to Lausch.

“The forum was a successful example of civil discourse and an exercise in American democracy,” Lausch said.
