West Chester, PA – Today, Representative Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), issued the following statement as Senate negotiations continued on a possible Reconciliation bill:

“As we dealt with the health and economic shocks to our system caused by the pandemic, spending federal funds to protect families and small businesses from further collapse was the right thing to do,” said Houlahan. “With vaccines widely available, and schools and businesses open, we need to revisit our nation’s balance sheet and not be so ready to take on additional debt. As negotiations continue on a possible Reconciliation package, I urge my colleagues to include provisions that reduce our national debt.”

Houlahan has been a consistent voice for fiscal responsibility, most recently joining colleagues in authoring a letter to Congressional leadership insisting on deficit reduction in a Reconciliation package. The Inflation Action Plan she co-authored and released last month includes recommendations to “substantially reduce the deficit.” Earlier this year, as negotiations continued on a Fiscal Year 2022 spending bill, Houlahan joined colleagues on both sides of the aisle in calling for responsible budget provisions and the creation of a bipartisan Debt Commission.      

Houlahan is an Air Force veteran, an engineer, a serial entrepreneur, an educator and a nonprofit leader. She represents Pennsylvania’s 6th Congressional District, which encompasses Chester County and southern Berks County. She serves on the House Armed Services Committee, the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Small Business Committee. She is the recipient of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Abraham Lincoln Leadership for America Award which “recognizes members who demonstrate the bipartisan leadership and constructive governing necessary to move our country forward.”
