PENN TOWNSHIP—This week, federal funding of $2.5 million was allocated to help restore health care services to southern Chester County. The funding will go to ChristianaCare to support reopening of the former Jennersville Hospital in Jennersville.

In late September, a plan was adopted by the Chester County board of commissioners to distribute $38 million in grants, including $2.5 million for the former 52-bed Jennersville Hospital.

In March of 2021, President Joe Biden signed the American Rescue Plan into law. The federal funds including in the legislation were distributed to each state to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, funds are being allocated at the county level; Chester County was awarded over $100 million.

Dr. Janice Nevin, president and CEO of ChristianaCare, said the federal resources will help to bring quality health care to the region.

“We are proud of our reputation for delivering high-quality care for our patients, and we look forward to expanding that care in Chester County,” said Dr. Nevin. “These federal funds will greatly assist us in opening new health care services at the ChristianaCare West Grove Campus to serve the surrounding communities.”

Rep. Chrissy Houlahan said she was elated by the news.

“Having two hospitals close in our community just a month apart was devastating to southern Chester County,” said Houlahan. “For months, officials have been working together to restore lifesaving emergency services to the many Pennsylvanians impacted by this, and finally we have good news to share. This $2.5 million grant from the American Rescue Plan will speed up the delivery of quality, accessible health care in our community. I’m pleased to see these vital resources put to good use here in Chester County.”

Earlier this year, ChristianaCare completed its purchase of the former Jennersville Hospital location from Tower Health. Under its new name, ChristianaCare West Grove Campus, the site will once again serve the health needs of the southern Chester County community — but the opening of services at the campus will take some time.

ChristianaCare already serves many residents of southern Chester County. On March 21, ChristianaCare announced the integration of two primary care practices at Jennersville and West Grove that were previously part of Tower Health.
