Houlahan Celebrates SEPA Designation as Precision Medicine Tech Hub

The Greater Philadelphia Region was named one of five Tech Hubs in the country focusing on biotechnology. Today’s announcement comes on the heels of SEPA designation as a Hydrogen Hub.

WEST CHESTER, PA – Today, Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) applauded the federal investments and new, good-paying jobs that will come to the Greater Philadelphia Region because of its designation as a Tech Hub by the Department of Commerce. Specifically, the Greater Philadelphia Region will be a Precision Medicine Tech Hub focusing on biotechnology. Rep. Houlahan wrote a letter of support for this designation in August of this year.

“This is a great day for Pennsylvania and for our country,” said Houlahan. “As an engineer and chemistry teacher, I know our Commonwealth has long been recognized as a leader in STEM innovation, manufacturing, and education excellence and I’m so pleased that we will be home to one of our country’s first tech hubs to innovate and improve health care processes. Thanks to the CHIPS and Science Act and the Economic Development Administration, southeastern Pennsylvania will continue to bring good-paying jobs to our region and advance cutting-edge health care initiatives.”

According to the Department of Commerce: The Biden-Harris administration, through the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA), announced the designation of 31 Tech Hubs in regions across the country. This is the first phase of the new Tech Hubs program, which is an economic development initiative designed to drive regional innovation and job creation by strengthening a region’s capacity to manufacture, commercialize, and deploy technology that will advance American competitiveness. The program invests directly in burgeoning, high-potential U.S. regions and aims to grow their capabilities as globally competitive innovation centers.

The Tech Hubs program was authorized by the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act, a piece of legislation that Rep. Houlahan voted for, and President Biden signed into law last year.

“It cannot be overstated how remarkable these investments headed right here to Chester and Berks Counties are,” said Houlahan. “This month alone, the Biden-Harris Administration has designated our community as both a Hydrogen Hub and Medicine Tech Hub. In short, that means a boost in our economic activity and a lot of new jobs. These federal funds will help us continue to grow the middle class and are a great example of what happens when we pass forward-thinking, national legislation like the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the CHIPS and Science Act.”

ICYMI: Earlier this month, southeastern Pennsylvania was also named a Hydrogen Hub by the Department of Energy. That project is expected to bring thousands of good-paying jobs and transform clean energy across the Commonwealth. She represents Pennsylvania’s 6th Congressional District, which encompasses Chester County and southern Berks County.
