WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) issued the following statement:
“Last Thursday, the House was notified about the slate of truly non-serious bills scheduled for floor votes this upcoming week. Once again, I was disheartened, frustrated, and concerned not to see the Senate-passed security supplemental, or any version of it, included, especially after Speaker Johnson’s repeated comments that he would prioritize this aid when Congress returned to Washington. In fact, he personally told me he would do so weeks ago.
The same day, in response to this list of bills, I submitted an amendment to one of the many so-called “appliance freedom” bills. My amendment would attach the entire Senate-passed supplemental, which provides much-needed humanitarian aid and support to Ukraine, Israel, and our allies in the Indo-Pacific, to the underlying bill.
While I’m glad to see reports that the Republican majority is rethinking their legislative priorities for the week, it shouldn’t have taken Iran’s attack on Israel to focus their attention on responsible governing, as we have been entrusted by the American people to do.
This weekend’s events make it all the more clear – we need to spend our valuable time in Washington addressing the very real wars many democracies are facing, rather than stoking the faux culture wars on kitchen appliances.
We must not waiver in our support for our global democratic partners. National security and humanitarian aid are urgent in both Israel and Ukraine, and the Chinese Communist Party grows bolder and more concerning each day.
When the House Rules Committee convenes tomorrow, I urge them to include my amendment. My Republican and Democratic colleagues should also join me and over 190 of my colleagues who have already signed onto a bipartisan discharge petition allowing us to force a vote on the full Senate-passed security supplemental.
Alternatively, I urge Speaker Johnson to simply bring the Senate-passed security supplemental to the floor for a suspension vote. This is not hard. People are dying, and the world is becoming more dangerous by the minute while the Republican-led House prepares to debate refrigerators and dishwashers,” said Houlahan.
