Houlahan Issues Statement on Former President Trump Guilty Verdict

  • Capitol Building
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) issued the following statement:

"Yesterday's conviction of former President Donald J. Trump marks a significant moment in our nation's history.  I believe no one is above the law, regardless of position, relationship, or political affiliation. The 34 unanimous guilty convictions by 12 jurors underscore the integrity and fairness of our judicial system. I deeply appreciate the jurors who served us all and fulfilled their civic duty under very difficult circumstances, and I have every reason to believe they acted in good faith. The strength of our democracy depends on the ability of ordinary citizens working within the judicial system to maintain the rule of law — a concept unimaginable in authoritarian countries like Russia and China.

The fact is that a former President and Commander in Chief was found to have falsified business records to hide a hush money payment. This verdict is not a celebratory moment but rather a sobering reminder of the standards we must all uphold. I am disappointed by colleagues of mine who chose this moment to release statements that appear to rejoice in the verdict. I am equally disappointed by the cynical and false statements some of my Republican colleagues have released. Their efforts to malign the jurors and the trial are for an audience of one — the former president.

Unlike those partisan colleagues who revel and those who rage, I support our justice system to fulfill the best interests of the American people.

Our democracy will endure as it has for nearly 250 years, provided we determine ourselves to be a nation of people in service to one another and a nation of laws where no one, not even a former president, is above the law."
