Houlahan Issues Statement on House Republicans 'So-Called' Proof of Citizenship Voting Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) issued the following statement regarding the SAVE Act:

"I voted against the House Republicans' so-called 'proof of citizenship' bill because, sadly, it was full of poison pills and was always intended to be a divisive messaging weapon used to erode Americans' faith in our elections. To be clear, I agree we need to protect the integrity of our elections. That's why I've voted yes on straightforward legislation that would only allow citizens to vote," said Houlahan. "The good news is that it's already illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections, and there is zero evidence of widespread fraud."

Houlahan added: "The largely partisan bill included provisions that even military organizations could not endorse, as it would prevent military members from using their military IDs to vote and would require those stationed overseas to return home to register to vote. It would also make it exceptionally difficult for women who have changed their names to register to vote by disallowing the use of birth certificates as proof of citizenship and threatening election volunteers with jail time for registering Americans to vote, to name some of the most egregious examples. With these facts in mind, I remain confident in our democratic processes and reject imposing undue costs on our citizens and servicemembers, limiting their access and constitutional right to vote."
