Houlahan Appointed to Bipartisan Task Force to Investigate Attempted Assassination of Former President Donald Trump

The task force will be comprised of seven Republicans and six Democrats and have full investigative authority, including subpoena authority

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) issued the following statement:

“It’s a distinct and solemn honor to be appointed by Speaker Mike Johnson and Leader Hakeem Jeffries to serve on the bipartisan task force to investigate the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump,” said Rep. Chrissy Houlahan. “Legislation needed to establish this task force passed the House unanimously, underscoring the mandate from Pennsylvanians and all Americans to conduct this investigation free from political influences and divisive rhetoric. I am committed to upholding our values of truth, civility, decency, and patriotism through my work on this task force.”

Houlahan continued: As a representative of Pennsylvania, the birthplace of the Republic and our American democracy, I believe the recent assassination attempt against former President Trump is a stark reminder of the fragility of our democratic institutions. This violent act was not just on one individual. Let us also remember other innocent people were in harm’s way and one man needlessly lost his life. Simply put, this assault goes against the very fabric of our nation. Leaders from all political backgrounds must condemn such violence and unite in one voice to say once and for all that political differences do not justify violence.”

“We have the utmost confidence in Rep. Chrissy Houlahan and this bipartisan group of steady, qualified and capable Members of Congress to move quickly to find the facts, ensure accountability and help make certain such failures never happen again,” said Speaker Johnson and Leader Jeffries.

The House Resolution establishing the task force passed 416-0.

Background:

Last week, Speaker Johnson and Leader Jeffries announced the Task Force to Investigate the Attempted Assassination of presidential nominee Donald Trump. The Task Force will be empowered with all investigative authority of the House of Representatives including subpoena authority.

The goal of the Task Force will be threefold: (1) To understand what went wrong on the day of the attempted assassination (2) To ensure accountability (3) To prevent such an agency failure from ever happening again.

The Task Force will make recommendations for reform to the relevant government agencies and recommend any necessary legislation to implement the reforms. The House will vote on a resolution this week that will establish the Task Force and its members. The task force will be comprised of seven Republicans and six Democrats.

ICYMI: In the wake of the attempted assassination attack, Houlahan called on the Secret Service Director to resign. Houlahan was also an original cosponsor of the House Resolution remembering the life of Corey Comperatore who was killed at the July 13 rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania.

Houlahan is an Air Force veteran, an engineer, a serial entrepreneur, an educator, and a nonprofit leader. She represents Pennsylvania’s 6th Congressional District, which encompasses Chester County and southern Berks County. She serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. She is the recipient of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Abraham Lincoln Leadership for America Award which “recognizes members who demonstrate the bipartisan leadership and constructive governing necessary to move our country forward” and the Congressional Management Foundation’s 2022 Democracy Award for best Constituent Services in Congress.
