COATESVILLE — Completion of the $70 million Coatesville Train Station is on schedule and trains are set to run out of the station at 4th Avenue and Fleetwood Street in about a year. SEPTA riders will soon be able to board at the station.

City Manager James Logan commented on the station’s progress.

“The region is eager to see the train station completed by the end of 2025, and we anticipate the return of SEPTA thereafter,” Logan said. “The timing coincides nicely with the culmination of a number of other city projects currently in the works.”

Recently completed construction activities on the future station include the installation of the south platform panels.  On the north side of the tracks, ongoing construction activities to be finalized include a temporary support system of the tracks along with the final retaining wall and repaving of Coates Street.

Additionally, Amtrak completed construction of a 2½-mile-long freight bypass track needed to accommodate Norfolk Southern wide loads around the future new high-level platforms. Future work includes the construction of elevator/stair towers, conversion of the 4th Avenue underpass from vehicular to a bicycle/pedestrian connection between platforms, and a station parking lot.

Construction of two 536-foot-long platforms is underway. Fleetwood Street will be relocated and the station will be 100 percent ADA compliant. High platforms mean that every Amtrak train will be able to stop in Coatesville.

U.S. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan helped secure train station funding.

“Coatesville is a pillar of southeastern PA, and I’m thrilled this historic revitalization will be completed within a year,” Houlahan said. “The people of Coatesville will benefit greatly from a modernized train station with accessible platforms, elevators, and security systems.

“These updates will provide better commuting options, energize the community, and bolster economic growth. I look forward to seeing this project completed.”

State Sen. Carolyn Comitta regularly rides the train to Harrisburg.

“The new Coatesville train station is central to the city’s ongoing strategic revitalization,” Comitta said. “I recently had the opportunity to visit the site with PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll, City Manager James Logan, and state Rep. Dan Williams.

“This is a major investment in the people of Coatesville and the future of Coatesville and the surrounding region. I look forward to its opening next year and will continue to fight for funding for SEPTA in the state legislature.”

State Rep. Dan Williams is pleased that the station will serve the 74th District.

“I’m excited that we’re nearing completion of the new Coatesville train station and look forward to the grand opening sometime next year,” Williams said. “It will not only serve as a new gateway into the city but will provide easy access for those who find opportunities outside of the area.

“It will also provide full ADA access to trains that have been missing for far too long. This is a critical step for the revitalization of Coatesville and the entire 74th District.”

Lancaster company Wickersham Construction and Engineering Inc. bid and won a $38.5 million contract.

“The $70 million investment, funded by state and federal dollars, is already benefitting the local businesses and workers with one multi-million-dollar contract going to a local electrical construction firm,” according to Comitta.
