Our Commander in Chief using the National Guard as a political prop not only demeans our servicemembers, but erodes the trust of the American people in our armed forces and undermines readiness for actual conflicts and emergencies. I addressed this during the NDAA amendment process because spending millions every day on this political theater helps no one, least of all our men and women in uniform.

Today, we vote on the National Defense Authorization Act. Democrats are coming to the table in good faith: offering a strong, bipartisan defense authorization bill that will improve quality of life for our servicemembers and their families. I call on my Republican colleagues to reject poison pills and preserve this vital bill that protects our national security.

I am proud that my bipartisan amendment on emerging biotechnologies was included in this year's National Defense Authorization Act. And I thank my fellow BioTech Caucus members, Rep. Khana, Sessions, and Bilirakis for their partnership.
