WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, Representative Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) reintroduced a bipartisan resolution recognizing the third Wednesday in July as Bump Day. Houlahan was joined by Representatives Young Kim (R-CA) and Robin Kelly (D-IL) in advocating for maternal health recognition. Bump Day is a global advocacy day for maternal health action and awareness and reaffirms the U.S.’ commitment to improving maternal health and ending preventable maternal deaths both at home and abroad. “This resolution sends a clear message around the globe: The United States remains steadfast in its commitment to mothers and their children. Healthy mothers mean healthy families, who go on to construct strong and productive communities,” said Rep. Houlahan.“All moms, no matter what they look like or where they come from, deserve access to quality maternal healthcare. This resolution is a bipartisan promise that America will continue to strive to prevent maternal deaths, both at home and abroad.” “Mom and granda are the best titles I will ever have. Seeing my daughters have kids of their own has made supporting moms and expecting moms even more important for me in Congress,” said Rep. Kim. “National Bump Day celebrates moms, expecting moms, and babies across the nation and raises awareness of the preventable maternal mortality crisis in our communities. Pregnancy is a beautiful part of life, and I will keep working as Maternity Care Caucus co-chair to uplift all moms and women and provide them with the best care possible.” “Bump Day is a powerful reminder of the work we still have left to do to secure the best care and support for mothers and babies. I am proud to stand alongside my colleagues in calling for meaningful action to address the maternal mortality crisis, a crisis that disproportionately impacts Black women,” said Rep. Kelly. “Every mom deserves to feel safe and cared for during and after their pregnancy. Bump Day is an opportunity to celebrate the joys of motherhood and commit to ensuring that every mom has a healthy pregnancy and a happy life with their child.” “The health of our moms and babies isn’t a partisan issue — it’s a human issue. That’s why the What to Expect Project and I are so excited and proud to work together with Republicans and Democrats in both chambers in support of the #BumpDay Congressional Resolution — dedicated to raising awareness about and inspiring action to address the urgent need for better, more equitable, more respectful, and responsive care for every mom, everywhere. No exceptions, no disparities. We’re grateful to Representative Chrissy Houlahan for her continued leadership of maternal health and for leading this vital congressional effort jointly with the support of Representatives Young Kim and Robin Kelly. Their resolute support of maternal health on #BumpDay and every day is inspiring. Together, we can make sure that every mom gets the care she and her baby need and deserve,” said Heidi Murkoff, author of What to Expect When You’re expecting and founder of the What to Expect Project. Since joining Congress, Houlahan has been a staunch advocate for maternal health both in the U.S. and around the world. She introduced the Bump Day resolution for the 117th Congress with a bipartisan group of members and held a maternal health roundtable in Chester County last year.
