WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) issued the following statement after voting to fund the federal government:

“Our government should be a functioning pillar of society. Instead, the Republican-controlled House brought the nation within hours of a catastrophic shutdown by refusing to consider bipartisan legislation until the 11th hour. That is the sad but avoidable reality we face,” said Houlahan. “Bipartisanship is essential to address and resolve the many issues we face, and the majority’s willingness to compromise only as a last resort should concern us all.”

”Since conversations on funding the government began, I have been working behind the scenes in a bipartisan manner to find a path forward. But, it is ultimately up to the party in the majority and their leadership to meet the moment. To be sure, many of my colleagues on the other side of the aisle were also frustrated by this dangerous political brinkmanship.”

“That brings us to today when Democrats were successful in convincing Republicans to support the bipartisan continuing resolution. The bill is not perfect, but the negative impacts of a government shutdown would be far worse for the American people and our economy. Now, the work continues. We must come together and pass a full slate of appropriations bills that build our economy, grow the middle class, strengthen our national security, and invest in the future of our great nation.”

The continuing resolution, H.R. 5860, passed 335-91.

Houlahan is an Air Force veteran, an engineer, a serial entrepreneur, an educator, and a nonprofit leader. She represents Pennsylvania’s 6th Congressional District, which encompasses Chester County and southern Berks County. She serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. She is the recipient of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Abraham Lincoln Leadership for America Award which “recognizes members who demonstrate the bipartisan leadership and constructive governing necessary to move our country forward” and the Congressional Management Foundation’s 2022 Democracy Award for best Constituent Services in Congress.
