Bipartisan Members of Congress reaffirm their commitment to promoting national service

Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, Representatives Chrissy Houlahan (PA-06), Doris Matsui (D-CA), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), and Don Bacon (R-NE) reintroduced a resolution marking the Second Friday in June as National Service and Conservation Corps Day. This marks the latest step in the bipartisan group’s efforts to promote national service, and follows on the heels of the introduction of the Protect National Service Act.

"National service brings together Americans across political divides, uplifts communities, and is a terrific return on investment for the federal government,” said Rep. Houlahan. “Service and Conservation Corps across the country are offering an avenue for ordinary people to contribute to the existential fight against climate change. They’re a terrific example of the kind of national service programs that the federal government should be continuing to support."

“My grandfather was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and it made a positive lifelong impact. So, I'm pleased to support designating the second Friday of June as National Service and Conservation Corps Day, recognizing the vital work of more than 150 Service and Conservation Corps across our nation,” said Rep. Bacon. “These dedicated Corps engage nearly 23,000 young adults and veterans annually in vital projects that strengthen our communities and preserve our natural resources.”

“The spirit of service and dedication to our fellow Americans is deeply rooted in our national identity,” said Rep. Matsui. “National service programs and Conservation Corps empower everyday Americans to create a robust network of support and drive meaningful change at scale. As co-chair of the Congressional National Service Caucus, I have long fought to expand service opportunities and ensure they get the resources that they need. This resolution celebrates the transformative impact of service programs and reaffirms our commitment to this invaluable work.”

“I’ve long supported and fought for our national service programs because they deliver real results—strengthening communities, developing leaders, and giving Americans of all backgrounds the chance to step up and make a difference. By establishing National Service and Conservation Corps Day, we’re reaffirming our commitment and support for the organizations doing this important work every day—and for the core belief that service to others makes our country stronger,” said. Rep. Fitzpatrick.

The bill is also endorsed by The Corps Network, an association of more than 150 service and conservation corps.

“Americans love visiting public lands but may not be aware of the hard work that goes into maintaining our trails, campgrounds, habitats, and other outdoor assets. National Service and Conservation Corps Day is a time to thank the thousands of young people who serve in Corps programs every year and help expand access to our parks and forests. Today, and every day, I have deep gratitude and respect for those who choose to serve outdoors so we can all enjoy our public lands,” said Mary Ellen Sprenkel, President and CEO of The Corps Network. “On behalf of the 150 member organizations of The Corps Network, thank you Representatives Houlahan, Fitzpatrick, Matsui, and Bacon for recognizing the importance of national service for our lands and our youth. We look forward to continue working with you to support AmeriCorps and our resource management agencies.”
